Unexpected color combinations make me so happy. This one came to me while I was helping a client select outfits for her trip to Paris. I put a green skirt with a peach colored blouse, which is something I never would have done for myself! That’s what’s so fun about helping others, it forces me to really stretch my creativity with colors and prints. On a side note, I really need to invest in a nice pair of sunglasses. It’s hard for me to justify it when I know it’s just a piece of plastic. Plus, who can tell that mine only cost $12?

middle of the road

Lately I’ve been feeling very “middle of the road” and not in a political sense, but more like being pulled in so many different directions I don’t know which way to go. I feel like there’s so much I want to do creatively and professionally that I’m beginning to spread myself too thin. I need to start editing my goals rather than half-assing (spell?) projects that I care about.

After reading Kendi’s post about her recent struggles with stress and anxiety, I recognized a lot of the emotions that she has experienced within myself. Sometimes the pressure to succeed can be so overwhelming that you forget to have fun. I took a little break from blogging last week because I was feeling so stressed out about work and various projects that I have been working on. I wanted to hide away and just be a vegetable on the couch for days…weeks…months? Then I realized that the only reason why I was feeling so stressed was because I wasn’t being kind to myself. I am constantly giving myself a hard time about not being good enough, or not being successful enough, or not having every little thing in order. I needed to sit myself down and tell myself to have fun because I’m finally doing something that I truly love. That doesn’t mean that it’s easy and there will always be new challenges that present themselves, but I can’t forget to have fun and relinquish control over things that I never really had control over in the first place.

As a result, taking pictures for this post was a breeze! I peeled myself off the couch, got dressed and Skinny and I headed out to snap photos. It was the easiest and quickest photo shoot that we’ve done. I attribute that to letting go of perfection and holding tighter to the bigger picture which is that life is short so I shouldn’t sweat the small stuff.

When I first saw this dress it immediately reminded me of this board game my sisters and I used to play all the time called Connect Four. It was one of those games that you would play in elementary school when it was raining outside so you’d have to take recess indoors. I can still remember how the chips felt and the noise it made when you would release all the chips from the vertical board. It’s such a nostalgic thing. Kids these days probably don’t even play board games anymore. It was such a simpler time and I’m so glad to be part of a generation that experienced life before internet and technology exploded.

going gatsby

It’s finally here. The Great Gatsby! I have been anticipating this day since I heard they were going to do another film adaptation with Baz Luhrmann at the helm.

I’m a huge fan of this book because of the love story and the roaring 1920′s with all of its art deco magnificence. But I have a confession to make…I’ve never actually read the book. What can I say – I was a high school sophomore and it was between Gatsby or Of Mice and Men – I went with George and Lennie. A friend and I were assigned to reenact the scene where George kills Lennie. We wore overalls and fashioned terrible southern accents. It was pretty awful, but we got an ‘A’ in the class.

Going back to Gatsby, my knowledge of this classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel comes from the 1974 film adaptation written by Francis Ford Coppola starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. That was a little hard to watch because of all the cheesy, lingering closeup shots and they kind of went overboard with the dream sequence effect. Robert Redford made it worth while, though.

Despite some of the negative reviews I’ve already read about this new adaptation, I’m hoping that all of Carrie Mulligan’s stunning costumes will make up for any shortcomings. I don’t think they could have picked a better Daisy. Leonardo DiCaprio fits the bill for Gatsby – he can play that handsome, charming, mysterious type so well. Based on the trailers I’ve seen, their chemistry is palpable! Ugh! Who doesn’t love a good love story?!
